UN says looks forward to continued cooperation with Iran under Raeisi

The United Nations says it seeks to maintain cooperation with Iran under its new administration that will be formed by President-elect Ebrahim Raeisi in the weeks to come.

Addressing a daily press briefing on Monday, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said the world body had taken note of Raeisi’s victory in Iran’s June 18 presidential election.

The UN chief, he added, “looks forward to the continued cooperation with the Iranian authorities on issues of mutual respect for the benefit of Iran and the people and of the region.”

Asked whether the UN chief would send a congratulation message to the Iranian president-elect or there was a statement regarding the election in general, as always, Dujarric said, “The usual process will be followed, I have no doubt.”

But, he added, the process would come “usually closer to the time of inauguration…at least six weeks from now.”

Raeisi was elected Iran’s eighth president after he garnered almost 62 percent of the votes in the June 18 election. He will succeed President Hassan Rouhani, who has served two four-year terms in office.

Many world leaders, senior foreign officials, prominent figures, and regional resistance leaders have so far offered congratulations on his victory in the presidential election.
