Iran enjoys large degree of democracy despite election controversies: Academic

A political commentator says Iran enjoys a “very large degree of democracy,” despite all the controversies that have always revolved around presidential candidates and the vetting process by the Constitutional Council in the country.

What is important is that debates over such issues are not restricted thanks to the large degree of democracy existing in Iran, said Mohammad Marandi, professor of world studies at Tehran University in an interview with Press TV.

Marandi highlighted a call by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for a high turnout in the June 18 presidential election, saying a good participation in the vote would give the government a strong mandate at the current sensitive juncture in the region.
