FBI probing US Capitol breach as pressure grows on Trump to quit
The FBI is reportedly investigating whether pro-Trump protesters intended to harm the lawmakers, when they stormed the Capitol Wednesday as pressure grows on the president to leave office before his tenure ends on January 20.
Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, where the lawmakers were engaged in the process to certify the victory of President-elect Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
“We’re not looking at this as a grand conspiracy, but we are interested in learning what people would do with things like zip ties,” an unnamed law enforcement official told The Washington Post, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation, referencing multiple photographs showing protesters holding zip ties.
The FBI warned it would take action even if the protesters are outside the DC area now.
“Just because you’ve left the DC region, you can still expect a knock on the door if we find out you were part of criminal activity in the Capitol,” Steven M. D’Antuono, head of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, told the newspaper.
There were, meanwhile, efforts underway to remove Trump from office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Charles Schumer were pushing Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment.
"Impeach him again," national security lawyer Brad Moss wrote on Twitter, "and indict him for conspiracy to incite a riot and sedition."
Discussions about removal of Trump have also begun in the cabinet, half of which would need to support the vice president in case he invokes the 25th Amendment.
Calls have also grown on Trump to resign himself by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
