In the Champions League, injury-hit Liverpool have suffered a 2-nil shocking defeat to Italian side Atalanta at Anfield and missed the chance to advance to the next round tonight.

The visitors went ahead on the hour-mark as Alejandro Gomez curled the ball towards Josip Ilicic who slid and poked it in at the back post.

Just 4 minutes later, Gomez swung the ball deep to Robin Gosens, who guided it past Alisson from close range. With the loss, Liverpool still top the table in Group D with 9 points out of 4 matches, while Atalanta are 3rd with 7 points. The Merseyside Reds can still qualify with a draw against Ayax next week.

Manchester City have advanced to the knockout stages with 2 games to spare after edging past Olympiakos 1-nil in Greece.

The Sky Blues got on the scoresheet in the 36th minute as Raheem Sterling laid the ball off to Phil Foden, who tapped in from close range. The victory means that Pep Guardiola’s side have kept their perfect run in the Champions League with 4 wins out of 4 games, sitting atop Group C with 12 points.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Real Madrid have defeated Inter Milan 2-nil at San Siro Stadium. Madrid wasted no time as Belgium International Eden Hazard scored from the spot just 6 minutes into the match. Inter suffered the 2nd blow in the 59th minute as Ashraf Hakimi netted in an own-goal after deflecting a shot.

Los Blancos are 2nd in Group B with 7 points, one shy of leaders Monchengladbach with 8 points. Meanwhile, Inter plunged to the bottom of the table with only 2 points from 4 matches.

Real Madrid will travel to Shakhtar Donetsk next week as Inter head to Monchengladbach.
