Fears of second COVID-19 wave grow in EU

As a growing number of people make use of public facilities across the 27-nation EU, concern is mounting that a second wave of the deadly coronavirus pandemic might strike. We have been speaking to citizens to find out what they think.

The EU's executive arm, the European Commission, is anticipating new clusters but suggests a wide-scale, second outbreak can be prevented.

The so-called perfect storm could be on the way, according to epidemiologists. COVID-19 prefers it when the weather is colder. The regular flu will surge during the winter as it does every year. Viruses like it when groups of people come together indoors and, of course, that is more likely to happen during winter months too.

The EU commission wants member states to stockpile medicines, including the seasonal flu vaccine, and also protective equipment for healthcare staff. It says measures should be taken to protect the most vulnerable, particularly elderly people. As fears grow, all eyes are on scientists who are working around the clock to try and develop an all important vaccine.
