US imposes visa bans on Huawei employees citing human rights abuses
US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has announced visa restrictions on a number of employees of Huawei Technologies Co. and some other Chinese companies over what he described as complicity with their government's human rights abuses.
“The State Department will impose visa restrictions on certain employees of Chinese technology companies like Huawei, that provide material support to regimes engaging in human rights violations and abuses globally,” Pompeo said in a statement on Wednesday.
He further called Huawei as "an arm of the CCP’s surveillance state that censors political dissidents.”
“Telecommunications companies around the world should consider themselves on notice: If they are doing business with Huawei, they are doing business with human rights abusers,” Pompeo claimed.
He did not elaborate over the details, including the exact number of people who would be affected.
The former CIA chief further praised the United Kingdom for barring Huawei from operating its 5G network.
“We were happy about it,” he said. “Faster is always better to get this equipment out of their system, it's a security risk. It isn't about commercial interest, this is about protecting the information in this case, of the United Kingdom's people.”
In another part of his statement, Pompeo also announced that Washington is moving toward sanctions against the EU companies that are involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
“Get out now or risk the consequences,” he said.
The US claims that the 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) pipeline will give Moscow excessive control over energy supplies to Europe, but Germany says it will provide the country with necessary resources.
