92-year-old Colombian woman overcomes COVID-19, but loses son to deadly virus

A 92-year-old Colombian woman received a rousing send-off from hospital staff in Suesca, a small town north of Bogota on Thursday (April 23) after recovering from COVID-19.

Joaquina Garzon recovered along with her 54-year-old grandson, Gonzalo Jimenez who also contracted the virus.

But not all the news was a cause for celebration in the family with officials forced to tell Garzon that the deadly coronavirus had claimed the life of her youngest son.

Doctors were surprised by Garzon's recovery, given a history of hypertension. Elderly people are particularly susceptible to the novel coronavirus, which can cause pneumonia and symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

So far in Colombia there are 5,142 COVID-19 cases and 233 deaths according to a Reuters tally as of 1400 GMT on Sunday (April 26).
