A 3-year-old boy has accidentally shot his mother in the head in the US state of Michigan, authorities say.
The shooting happened on Saturday afternoon in a home in the Bailey's Grove area in Kentwood, Sgt. Stephanie Morningstar told reporters.
Police and firefighters arrived at the scene after they received a report that a boy discharged a gun, striking his 26-year-old mother in the back of the head.
The woman was transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth hospital and she is expected to survive.
Officials, who were at the scene collecting evidence on Saturday, did not provide further details.
It is estimated that there are between 270 million and 300 million guns in the US, about one per person, according to the New York Daily News.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
Earlier this month, a study showed that Americans are 25 times more likely to be murdered by a gun than people in other developed nations.
Overall the death rate involving guns in the United States is 10 times higher than 22 other high-income countries, said researchers from the University of Nevada-Reno and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
