Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has announced his resignation without specifying any reason as his party struggles to rebuild trust for future parliamentary elections.
“I took the decision to leave my post,” said Garibashvili in a televised address on Wednesday.
“All posts are temporary. Only God and the motherland are eternal.”
The announcement came amid increasing speculations over the past days in the Georgian media about the resignation of Garibashvili and his purported plans for a more powerful presence in the parliamentary votes slated for November 2016.
Garibashvili’s Georgian Dream party has seen a significant fall in popularity as voters have become increasingly disappointed by its failure to improve living standards in the former Soviet nation.
The 33-year-old became the youngest head of government in Europe when he took office in November 2013.
Former prime minister and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili named Garibashvili as the interior minister in October 2012, months after Georgian Dream swept to power by routing supporters of former President Mikhail Saakashvili.
However, recent polls suggest that support for Saakashvili's National Movement is steadily increasing.
Critics have repeatedly dismissed Garibashvili as inexperienced, saying he is a pawn controlled by Ivanishvili from behind the scenes.
Some Georgian media rejected hypotheses about Garibashvili’s struggle to boost his party’s support, saying he is aiming to become mayor of the capital Tbilisi.
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili now has seven days to name a new prime minister before the parliament, dominated by Georgian Dream, decides on the issue. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who has served as the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, is tipped to replace Garibashvili.
