Last week’s mass shooting in the US and the weekend knife incident in London – both reportedly inspired by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group - have raised concerns over the rise of what is known as “lone wolf attacks” in the West.
Alan Gibbons, an award winning author from the UK, has told Press TV that Britain could soon find itself exposed to larger risks of Daesh-related attacks in the near future.
Gibbons emphasized that this could be a result of Britain’s involvement in the ongoing military operations against the terrorists in Iraq and Syria.
“As long as Britain is involved in the anti-Daesh operations in Syria and Iraq, it is highly likely that there will be some forms of attacks,” he told Press TV’s UK Desk in an exclusive interview.
“We do have evidence that one of the Parisian attackers was actually drawn to the UK to launch attacks in the UK mainland.”
Last Wednesday, a couple armed with rifles and handguns attacked a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino, California, killing at least 14 people and wounding 17, the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in three years.
The Takfiri Daesh terrorist group declared in an online audio broadcast on Saturday that the assailants were followers of the militants.
An English-language version of the broadcast was later released, calling the attackers "soldiers" of the terror group, rather than "followers.
Also on Saturday, a knifeman in his late twenties attacked several people at a subway station in London. The attacker was reportedly shouting “This is for Syria” during his attack that left one man seriously wounded and another with minor injuries before being arrested by the police.
Gibbons told Press TV that the US faces the risk of higher fatalities in attacks by Daesh sympathizers because of the right to arms for the Americans.
He further criticized the Western media for showing bias toward news of attacks that are related to the ISIL. Such news, he said, are largely described as “terrorist” incidents, whereas similar attacks by other groups are not described the same.
“What is interesting is that when attacks are carried out by neo-Nazis which are political and are using the arms in the same way, the press does not refer to them as terrorist attacks,” Gibbons told Press TV.
