The Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group has adapted to the US-led military campaign to defeat it and is looking for intelligence failures to stage an attack in the United States, says the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

“The reality is even the best intelligence will not stop a determined enemy that adapts to our defenses,” Rep. Adam Schiff, Democrat of California, said on “ABC’s This Week” on Sunday.

“And ISIS has adapted,” he added, using another acronym for the Daesh terrorist group, which claimed responsibility for a string of coordinated attacks in Paris that killed at least 132 people Friday night.

Daesh terrorists have also claimed responsibility for the deadly bombings in Beirut, Lebanon, the day before as well as last month’s downing of a Russian airliner over Egypt that killed all 224 people on board.

Rep. Schiff said similar attacks appear inevitable unless the US and its allies ramp up the campaign to root out the terror group.

“The implications are this is not just an intelligence failure; it's a failure also of a coalition campaign," he said, "because we have allowed ISIS to have sanctuary in Syria and Iraq, with too much time to plan and plot, too much resources to be directed against us.”

“We are a harder target, a harder target to reach, but we know that ISIS aspires to attack us here in the United States as well,” the lawmaker noted.

The Paris attacks have brought the Obama administration’s strategy against Daesh into sharp focus. The bombings and shootings happened hours after an interview aired in which President Barack Obama claimed the terror group had been “contained.”

The US appears to be escalating the bombing campaign in Syria.

The New York Times reported that American warplanes attacked earlier Monday some 116 ISIL trucks that the group has been using to smuggle the crude oil it steals in Syria.

In addition, the Obama administration is calling on France and Turkey to deploy ground forces in Syria to lead the fight against Daesh alongside the 50 special forces the US has already deployed there, CBS News reported Monday.
