Iran has vowed to take necessary political and legal follow-up measures over the recent deadly stampede during the Hajj pilgrimage rituals in Mina, outside the holy city of Mecca.

Iran will adopt “necessary measures” to prevent the reoccurrence of incidents such as the Mina tragedy, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a live televised interview with the IRIB from New York on Sunday.

On September 24, a fatal crush took place in Mina as two large crowds of pilgrims were on their way to participate in the symbolic stoning of Satan, a Hajj ritual.

Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry has put the death toll from the incident at nearly 770.

However, the fatality figure released by Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization stands at around 2,000. According to the latest announcement by the organization, the death toll of the Iranian pilgrims also stands at 169. Some 46 Iranians have also been hospitalized, while 298 others are still missing.

Zarif said that Iranian consular officials in Saudi Arabia were denied access to those injured in the Mina incident in contravention of international regulations.

The Iranian foreign minister, who is in New York to attend the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, added that there has been "no good cooperation" on the part of Saudi officials with Iran in identifying the injured pilgrims and those who are still unaccounted for following the Mina crush.

Following Saudi officials’ refusal to cooperate with Iran, Zarif said that he had asked the Kuwaiti Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, to mediate on the issue.

Zarif also once again expressed his condolences to Muslim nations across the world over the sad event.

Addressing a group of clerics on Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the Saudi rulers should apologize for the recent deadly incident in Mina instead of shirking responsibility.

“The Muslim world has many questions in this regard and Saudi rulers, instead of shunning [their responsibility] must accept their responsibility in this grave incident by apologizing to the Muslim Ummah and bereft families,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

Meeting between Iran, Iraq FMs

In a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari in New York on Sunday, Zarif briefed his counterpart on the latest outcomes regarding the fate of Iranian pilgrims killed and wounded in the Mina incident.

The Iraqi minister expressed his condolences over the tragedy and stressed the importance of taking more serious measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Iranian and Iraqi foreign ministers also discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly the crisis in Syria, which has claimed more than 250,000 lives since it began in March 2011.

Jaafari said Iran plays an important role in solving regional issues and called for the Islamic Republic’s further cooperation in this regard.
