The prime ministers of Pakistan and India have no plan to meet during the meeting of world leaders in New York, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry says.
Qazi Khalilullah, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, rejected on Thursday speculation that Nawaz Sharif and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi might seek the opportunity to improve frosty ties during the upcoming UN General Assembly.
“No proposal is on the table for the meeting of the two PMs,” Reuters quoted Khalilullah as saying.
The two leaders are due to stay at the same hotel in New York.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman also confirmed that Sharif would raise the issue of conflict in Kashmir during his address to the General Assembly on Friday.
Last month, scheduled talks between the national security advisers from the two neighbors were cancelled hours before they were due to start.
India wanted to only discuss terrorism-related issues, while Pakistani officials wanted a wider agenda, including the status of the disputed region of Kashmir.
Senior authorities in New Delhi say the Indian prime minister is unwilling to discuss other issues unless Pakistan admits to its role in terror attacks in India. Pakistan, on the other hand, says the condition by New Delhi to leave out the issue of Kashmir is a hurdle to negotiations.
Sharif, the Pakistani premier, recently pointed to the issue of Kashmir as the main bone of contention between Pakistan and India, saying that the matter should also be raised at other platforms besides bilateral talks.
“[The] sooner the issue is resolved, the better it will be for both Pakistan and India,” Sharif told reporters in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, on September 22, before heading to New York for the 70th annual session of the UN General Assembly.

India and Pakistan claim the entire territory of Kashmir as their own, but based on an agreement in 1947, they use the heavily militarized Line of Control (LoC) to divide the Himalayan region between themselves.
India, however, blames Pakistan for having a hand in the Kashmir insurgency. Pakistan denies any wrongdoing, saying it will continue supporting the Kashmiri people’s struggle for a right to self-determination.
