German police have carried out raids in the capital, Berlin, targeting individuals suspected of attempting to recruit people for Daesh militants in Syria.

Berlin police said in a statement on Tuesday that their forces had conducted raids on eight different locations in the city.

During the raids, which started early in the day, the whereabouts of a 51-year-old Moroccan man believed to have been recruiting Daesh members and a 19-year-old Macedonian currently thought to be in Syria were targeted.

One of the raids was reportedly carried out in the capital’s central Tempelhof-Schoeneberg district.

“There is no reason to believe that the suspects have prepared attacks in Germany,” the statement added, however.

This comes as reports indicate some 600 people from Germany have joined the militants operating in Syria and Iraq.

Over the past few years, Syria and Iraq have witnessed a growing presence of foreign-backed militants, who have been carrying out such atrocities as mass executions against the people.

The militancy in the two neighboring countries has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and left millions of others displaced, forcing many to seek refuge in neighboring and European countries.
