An outbound British Airways plane has caught fire at the Las Vegas airport following a “catastrophic failure” of the left engine.
Fourteen people suffered minor injuries in the incident on Tuesday and were transported for medical care, according to CNN.
Flames engulfed the fuselage of the Boeing 777 that was heading from the McCarran Airport to London’s Gatwick Airport.
Aerial video showed the plane on the tarmac, with passengers using several slides to exit and board buses that took them to the terminal.
There were 159 passengers and 13 crew members on board.
The fire was swiftly extinguished by about 50 firefighters.
Eyewitness Reggie Bugmuncher said she was waiting at a gate for her flight when she saw “bursts of flames coming out of the middle of the plane,” the Associated Press reported.
A reporter for the Guardian, Jacob Steinberg, was on board the plane and tweeted about the evacuation. “Was asleep as the plane took off. Came to a crashing halt. Smell of smoke. Initially told to stay seated, then shout of evacuate.”
“They opened the back door and slide went down and smoke started coming in plane, followed by mad dash to front. A lot of panic,” Steinberg added.
