British Prime Minister David Cameron sets out his plans to resettle thousands of asylum seekers from Syria.
Cameron told the UK parliament on Monday that his country should resettle 20,000 more refugees by 2020. He said Britain has already accommodated 5,000 Syrian asylum seekers.
He also said airstrikes in Syria were not part of the so-called US-led coalition action against Daesh (ISIL) terrorists, according to Reuters.
The British PM previously said that the refugees will come from camps bordering Syria rather than from among those already in Europe.
The latest speech comes after last week Cameron rejected calls for the UK to accept more asylum seekers, stating that accepting more refugees is not the solution to the current problem in the Mediterranean region.
Tens of thousands of asylum seekers from conflict-hit states in the Middle East and Africa have been trying to make their way to Europe via the Mediterranean in recent months, leaving a number of countries struggling to cope with the influx.
Now Sukant Chandan, political analyst and filmmaker, says Britain not only contributed to the current refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, it also helped escalate the conflict in Syria through its wrong policies.
Nearly 340,000 asylum seekers reached the European Union’s borders during the first seven months of the year, up from 123,500 during the same period in 2014, according to the bloc's border agency Frontex.
Meanwhile, people who want a more humane response by the Downing Street have put up a petition calling on the British government to accept more refugees. The petition has received over 420,000 signatures as of yet.
The ongoing conflict in Syria, which erupted in March 2011, has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 240,000 people so far. The UN says the militancy has displaced 7.6 million Syrians internally, and compelled some 4.6 million others to take refuge mostly in neighboring countries.
