A military jet has crashed during an airshow in southern England, killing seven people and injuring 15 others.
Police in Brighton said Saturday that the Hawker Hunter, which was taking part in the Shoreham airshow, crashed around afternoon and hit several vehicles on a nearby road.
According to witnesses, the jet apparently crashed after it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver.
“He'd gone up into a loop and as he was coming out of the loop I just thought, you're too low, you're too low, pull up. And he flew straight into the ground either on or very close to the A27, which runs past the airport,” Stephen Jones, a witness at the scene, told the local TV.
Police said seven were killed at the scene and one in a life-threatening condition was transferred to a nearby hospital. A further 14 were lightly wounded and were treated on the road. No one in the airfield was reported injured.
Images and videos circulating in the media showed huge plumes of black smoke rising after a fireball erupted near trees.
Reports did not elaborate on whether the pilot had ejected or not, but witnesses said he had just begun his display when the crash happened.
A pilot died in the same British airshow in 2007 after carrying out an unplanned performance.
