Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has nominated a prominent lawyer to become the country's first ever female judge in the influential Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, Ghani proposed Anisa Rasooli to become a member of the nine-member bench body.

The nomination was announced at a gathering of diplomats and women's rights activists, where the Afghan president called on all ministries to appoint female deputy ministers.

Rasooli, a leading lawyer and the head of the Afghan Women Judges Association, should also gain the approval of parliament before assuming the post in the Supreme Court.

During the Tuesday ceremony, Ghani also called for more active presence of women in social affairs, saying his government aims to create conditions “wherein Afghan women, alongside men, could form a prosperous, fair and purposeful society.”

He promised to bring “fundamental changes” to Afghanistan’s healthcare system so that women could receive fair and good services.

Ghani also said that women should play a more influential role in the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan as they “suffered a lot during years of conflict.”
