Russian media warned against faith-insulting material
The Russian media watchdog has warned the country’s media against publishing faith-insulting material.
On Monday, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) warned the RBC, the country’s main business media holding, and a number of newspapers, websites and news networks against covering material that may incite religious hatred.
The media had released the sacrilegious cartoons of the Prophet of Islam earlier published by the French weekly magazine, Charlie Hebdo.
Roskomnadzor stated that publishing such material is a blatant violation of Russia law.
Earlier this month, a massive rally was held in Grozny, the capital city of Russia’s Chechen Republic, in protest against Charlie Hebdo’s blasphemous depictions of Prophet Mohammad.
Five million copies of the new edition of Charlie Hebdo hit the newsstands in mid-January, depicting a cartoon of the Prophet on the cover amid warnings that the move is provocative.
The French magazine has repeatedly provoked Muslim anger by publishing cartoons of the Prophet.
On January 7, the magazine’s office in Paris came under an attack, during which 12 people were killed. The attack was largely believed to have been launched over the weekly’s previous cartoons of the Prophet.
