China has condemned a bomb attack in northwest Pakistan that killed five Chinese nationals working on a major dam construction site.

Police said on Tuesday that at least five Chinese nationals and their local driver were killed when a bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into their convoy.

It was on the main highway linking Pakistan to China.

The Chinese Embassy in Islamabad issued a statement in connection with the bombing.

“The Chinese Embassy and consulates in Pakistan strongly condemn this terrorist act, and express deep condolences for the victims of both countries and extend sincere sympathies to the families of the victims,” the statement said.

It also urged Pakistani authorities to “take practical and effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions, and projects to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

“The Chinese Embassy and consulates in Pakistan have immediately launched emergency work, demanding that the Pakistani side conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, severely punish the perpetrators, and take practical and effective measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens.”

There was no claim of responsibility for one of the deadliest attacks on Chinese nationals in recent years.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the Chinese Embassy to offer condolences over the death of Chinese nationals, his office said.

President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the attack and expressed “deep grief” over the death of the Chinese nationals. “Anti-Pakistan elements will never succeed in damaging Pak-China friendship.”

This is not the first time Chinese nationals have come under attack in the mountainous region.

In mid-2021, a car bombing targeted a bus convoy of Chinese engineers working on the biggest hydropower project in Pakistan. Nine Chinese nationals and three of their local co-workers were killed.

Most of Chinese engineers working in Pakistan are associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is an extension of Beijing’s global Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure program.
