Russian official says apartment complex on fire after Ukraine’s shelling in Donetsk

An official in Russian-controlled Donetsk says Ukraine fired shells that hit an apartment complex in Donetsk city on Tuesday.

Firefighters at the scene of the reported shelling put out a blaze that severely damaged a number of apartments at the building complex located in the Kyivskiy district of Donetsk city.

A Russian investigative committee representative on site showed reporters shell fragments while blaming the Ukrainian military for targeting the area with what he said was a multiple-launch rocket system. The unnamed official added that a number of civilians had been wounded in the attack.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the number of casualties or determine who was responsible for the shelling.

The city of Donetsk has been under Russian control since 2014, but Ukrainian troops continue to hold positions on its outskirts and it regularly comes under artillery fire.
