Raeisi felicitates Iran freestyle wrestling team on third consecutive world championship

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi

President Ebrahim Raeisi has congratulated Iran’s under-20 freestyle wrestling team on winning their third consecutive championship at the 2023 U-20 World Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan.

The Iranian wrestlers emerged victorious for the third time in a row from the international tournament on Wednesday, which started in the Jordanian capital of Amman on August 14 and will continue until 20.

The national under-20 freestyle wrestling squad managed to bring home a total of four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze during the competitions to claim the championship with 165 points.

The Iranian team was trailed by the United States with 152 and India with 102 points.

“Undoubtedly, this brilliant victory, which is another sign of the merit and perseverance of our country’s wrestlers, will continue with pride in the light of the efforts and strong resolve of the children of this soil,” Raeisi said in a message on Wednesday.

“Hereby, I congratulate the great nation of Iran on this invaluable achievement, and I appreciate all the wrestlers, authorities and coaches of the national youth freestyle wrestling team and wish them continued success,” the president added.

In a separate message, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf congratulated the Iranian nation on their championship.

Qalibaf also expressed his gratitude to the team’s coaches and technical staff for the “stunning” achievement.

Mohammad Reza Shakri, Mohammad Mobin Azimi, Abolfazl Babaloo and Amirreza Masoumi were the four Iranian gold medal winners in the international tournament.

The prestigious sports event had originally been scheduled to be held in the Polish capital of Warsaw from August 14 to 20, but due to Poland’s refusal to issue visas for Russian and Belarusian wrestlers, the United World Wrestling — the international governing body for the sport of wrestling — relocated the completions from Poland to Jordan.
