India's Assam struggles with floodwaters, rescuers help stranded people
Monsoon rains caused widespread flooding in northeastern India and Bangladesh, stranding nearly 6 million people, with officials warning the situation could worsen.
In Guwahati, the capital of India's northeastern Assam state, residents waded or drove on flooded streets on as they went about with their activities.
Further northeast of Guwahati on Saturday, June 18, villagers were evacuated to higher ground across a swollen river which started to inundate their homes.
Seasonal monsoon rains, a lifeline for farmers across South Asia, also typically cause loss of life and property every year. Bangladesh and India have experienced increasing extreme weather in recent years, causing large-scale damage. Environmentalists warn climate change could lead to more disasters, especially in low-lying and densely populated Bangladesh.
