Palestinians slam Israeli plan to designate Palestinian rights groups as terrorist organization

In an unprecedented attack against Palestinian civil society, Israel outlawed six Palestinian human rights organizations by placing them on its so-called terrorist list and accusing them of funneling donor aid to militants.

Israel's ministry of military affairs said the groups had ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP), a Palestinian resistance movement. The Palestinian authority and different political powers strongly condemned the Israeli decision.

The organizations targeted by the Israeli regime are Addameer and Al-Haq, which document human rights violations by Tel Aviv, and the Union of Palestinian Women's Committees, Bisan Center for Research, DCI Defense for Children International – Palestine, as well as the Union Of Agricultural Work Committees.

These groups have rejected the Israeli accusations as an attempt to eliminate Palestinian civil society, decrying the move as politically-motivated and baseless.

The Israeli move has also faced global condemnation from rights groups from different parts of the world. The United Nations Human Rights Office says the so-called Counter-terrorism legislation must not be used to constrain legitimate human rights and humanitarian work.

The Israeli regime has added to its illegal practices aimed at silencing the Palestinian people. Today, not only does it continue to punish Palestinians for any acts of struggle; it is also punishing human rights organizations. So the real test is now for the international community to protect human rights defenders in the face of continued assault and aggression.
