Bush, Trump lock horns over Liz Cheney

Former US President George W. Bush (L) and the United States' 45th President Donald Trump

Former US President George W. Bush intends to hold a fundraiser for Republican senator Liz Cheney in what seems to be an open declaration of war with former President Donald Trump who is seeking to oust the three-term Wyoming congresswoman.

The event, which is scheduled for Oct. 18, will also be co-hosted by other prominent Republican figures, including Karl Rove, a longtime Bush adviser, as well as Texas senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

Cheney, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney (2001-2009), was among ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, when the supporters of the former president broke into the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory.

Much to the chagrin of her fellow Republicans, she also criticized Trump for repeating claims of his election loss to Biden due to fraud.

Earlier this month, Trump officially endorsed Cheney’s challenger, Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman, in an attempt to defeat her as the state’s sole House member.

“Harriet Hageman adores the Great State of Wyoming, is strong on Crime and Borders, powerfully supports the Second Amendment, loves our Military and our Vets, and will fight for Election Integrity and Energy Independence (which Biden has already given up). Unlike RINO Liz Cheney, Harriet is all in for America First. Harriet has my Complete and Total Endorsement in replacing the Democrats number one provider of sound bites, Liz Cheney,” Trump said in a statement, using an acronym for "Republican in name only."

Back in May, Trump and his Republican allies in the Congress had also removed Cheney as the head of the 212-member House Republican Conference by supporting congresswoman Elise Stefanik in a party vote.
