Security clampdown, communication blackout in Kashmir to silence people

An overnight security clampdown and communications blackout occurred in Indian-administered Kashmir after the region’s iconic leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani died.
The mosques in the region announced the demise however Geelani’s followers were not able to participate in his funeral prayers. Officials say people’s participation could have resulted in massive law and order problems.
Kashmir has witnessed a record number of internet blackouts in the world and is the world’s largest militarized zone. Analysts say people in Kashmir have been forced into this silence since India stripped Kashmir of its autonomous status in august 2019.

People of Kashmir say since the Hindu nationalist BJP took a unanimous decision on Kashmir’s special status in august 2019, a lot has changed in Kashmir without their consent. They say the silence of the international community over the plight of Kashmiri people has added to their miseries and with each passing day living in this controlled land is getting difficult for them and sooner or later people of Kashmir are going to be the world’s new asylum seekers.
