Wimbledon: Federer beats Mannarino, reaches 2nd round

Roger Federer has started his quest for a 9th title at Wimbledon after edging past Adrian Mannarino of France, who retired due to injury.

The Swiss Maestro ran through the opener by taking it 6-4. But the Frenchman surprisingly flipped the script and took the second set in the tie-break before dominating the third set at 6-3.

However, the 39-year-old Swiss veteran found his rhythm and managed to take the fourth set 6-2 to send the match to a decider, where Mannarino was forced to retire due to injury.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner will meet another Frenchman Richard Gasquet in round 2.

Meanwhile, world number 2 Daniil Medvedev advanced to the second round of Wimbledon after beating Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 3 sets to 1 earlier on Tuesday.

The Russian was dominant in the beginning, taking the first two sets 6-4 and 6-1. But the German showed some resilience and took the third set 6-4, before Medvedev upped his game in the fourth and wrapped up the contest in a tie-break.
