As Covid-19 cases continue to surge in Indian-administered Kashmir, Muhammad Afaq Saeed has been swamped with distress calls from people looking for oxygen. Afaaq leads the oxygen campaign of a Srinagar-based NGO.

His small team of dedicated volunteers is working round the clock to help Covid patients gasping for breath. With the Himalayan region healthcare system reeling under tremendous pressure, good Samaritans and social organizations have come forward to extend helping hand to people in need.

Athrout Kashmir, a prominent philanthropic organization based out of Kashmir's summer capital, has converted the region’s Hajj House into a spacious 100-bed Covid center. The facility aims to cater to the rising number of Covid patients requiring hospitalization.

As hospitals are scrambling to shore up oxygen supplies, the authorities have decided to install over 30 new oxygen generating plants in the region. Also, the government is constructing a 500-bedded Covid hospital in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

As second wave of Covid-19 pandemic continues to take toll on healthcare system here, experts believe the worst is still ahead. Amid the unprecedented surge of the infections, Good Samaritans are lending a helping hand to the needy even as fear and anxiety loom large.
