US Senator Bernie Sanders has raised concern that President Donald Trump will refuse to leave office if he loses reelection in November 2020..
In an interview on Friday, Sanders called on Congress and the media to make preparations for when Trump refuse to leave offices.
“This is not just idle speculation,” said Sanders, pointing to comments the president made at the GOP convention. “Trump was saying that the only way he could lose the election is if there was — let me get the exact quote — ‘the only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.’ Now he is making that statement at a time when virtually every national poll has him behind.”
Sanders said Americans got to be warned about the "nightmarish scenario" that could be ahead..
“What we have got to do in the next two months is to alert the American people about what that nightmarish scenario might look like in order to prepare them for that possibility and talk about what we do if that happens,” he said.
In related news, the Transition Integrity Project, a bipartisan group, has also led a series of war-game exercises about different election scenarios.
In its report it said that, “Trump is likely to contest the result by both legal and extra-legal means, in an attempt to hold onto power.”
Trump is facing serious challenges for his reelection bid in November.
Trump's rival, Joe Biden, is in the lead by 7 points.
According to a new national poll, the Democratic nominee is significantly outperforming the president on the coronavirus crisis and the crackdown on pro-justice protesters in US cities.
