IranAir to resume flight service to Italy’s Rome

Iran’s flag carrier Homa says a flight service between Tehran and Italy’s Rome will start on Feb. 3.

Iran’s flag carrier Homa has announced that it is restoring a flight service between Tehran and Rome after the Italian government banned flights by Iran’s second largest airline in December.

Homa, known internationally as IranAir, said on Tuesday that flights two times a week to the Italian capital will begin on February 3, 2020.

“In response to requests by fellow citizens living abroad for reinstating this route ... this flight will be carried out on Mondays and Thursdays every week from Imam Khomeini airport (IKA) to Rome airport (FCO) and vice versa,” said a statement on the website of the company.

IranAir is currently flying to Italy’s Milan on Tuesdays and Fridays every week.

Homa’s decision to reinstate its route to Rome comes less than a month after a similar flight service by Iran’s Mahan Air was canceled because of a ban imposed by the Italian authorities.

The ban came under pressure from the United States which has forced several other European countries to stop accommodating flights by Mahan.

Flights to Rome also comes amid Homa’s ongoing efforts to restore flights to two Swedish cities after authorities in the Nordic country decided to halt them following a major plane crash in Iran.

Maqsoud Asadi Samani, who serves as secretary of the Association of Iranian Airlines, said on Tuesday that flights by Iranian carriers to all European destinations but Sweden had been reinstated after a short hiatus caused by the accidental shooting down of a Ukraine International Airlines plane.

Samani said, however, that the Swedish ban would be temporary as Iran has come up with proper explanations on the incident that took place on January 8 near Tehran and killed 176 people.
