The two long-time rival parties had expressed their intention to join forces and form a new administration after League's leader Matteo Salvini abruptly pulled the plug on the government with the 5SM on August 8.

However tensions between the two parties rose again on Friday, when the 5SM leader Luigi Di Maio issued his policy priorities, threatening a return to the vote if its requests are not accepted by the Democratic Party Revoking the decrees is a key demand from the Democratic Party.

Anti-migrant League leader and outgoing interior minister Salvini controversial hard line migrant and security decrees mandates one million Euros fines for NGO rescue ships and barring them from Italian waters. They also make it easier to deport migrants from Italy.

On Saturday Premier-designate Conte met with the House whips of the 5SM and the Democratic Party. Conte said that some progress was made at the end of the meeting. However pundits believe that a government deal is still far from being reached.

Italy is in an urgent need to form a stable government because it faces a critical autumn deadline for drafting the 2020 budget law.

The country also needs a new administration to adopt measures to boost economic growth at a time of domestic stagnation and risks of recession in Europe and the United States.
