US Court defense of Trump's Muslim ban gives full license to bigotry: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the US Supreme Court's complete endorsement of President Donald Trump's travel ban on Muslims is tantamount to giving a free pass to fanaticism.

"US Supreme Court defends and allows Trump's #MuslimBan to go into full effect," Zarif said on his official Twitter account on Tuesday.

He expressed regret that the court's move gives "bigotry full license in USA."

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Trump administration to fully enforce a travel ban targeting eight countries, six of them Muslim majority nations with no mention of a "bona fide" exception.

The new ruling means the Trump administration can fully enforce its entrance restrictions on most citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea, along with some groups of people from Venezuela.

During the 2016 presidential race, Trump campaigned for "a total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States on the pretext of preventing terrorist attacks.
