US President Donald Trump has accused former FBI director James Comey of seeking to spare last year’s Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, from prosecution “long before investigation was complete” into her government email practices.

“FBI confirms report that James Comey drafted letter exonerating Crooked Hillary Clinton long before investigation was complete,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

“Many people not interviewed, including Clinton herself. Comey stated under oath that he didn’t do this-obviously a fix? Where is Justice Dept?” he added.

Trump was referring to documents released on Monday by the FBI that show that Comey had composed a draft entitled: “Drafts of Director Comey’s July 5, 2016 Statement Regarding Email Server Investigation Part 01 of 01” about two months before the statement was actually made and before Clinton was interviewed.

Trump fired the FBI director in May citing Comey's investigation into alleged links between his presidential campaign and Russian interference in the election, as well as Comey's alleged protection of Clinton.

The former FBI chief was accused of exonerating Clinton of criminal charges regarding her personal email.

Comey, who has denied any wrongdoing, testified at a congressional hearing session in June that the Trump administration's defamation campaign against him “were lies, plain and simple".

In the testimony, he claimed that he had no doubt Moscow interfered with the US election, adding that he had been fired due to the Russia investigation.

Comey claimed that Trump “was telling, privately, other parties that firing him had relieved 'great pressure' on the Russia investigation".

Trump, however, said his decision to sack the FBI chief was due to Comey’s poor performance.

Comey's termination sparked a huge political firestorm in Washington at the time.
